Clark Co. woman urges others to put health first in the new year

ABOUT THE NEW YEAR AND THE CHANGES WE WOULD LIKE TO MAKE… IN THIS MONTH’S TALK PINK SEGMENT, THE MESSAGE ONE CLARK COUNTY WOMAN HAS FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE GREATEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE YOURSELF IN 2016 WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR HEALTH. :14 1:05 At 53 Pam Dunaway is going into the new year with a new look and outlook on life when it comes to her health.”I didn’t have a mammogram for three years,” said Pam Dunaway. Life had gotten in the way, but this past fall she got back on track with self checks. “I thought well, I need to check my breast because its been awhile since I had done that. My hand went right to the spot and I was like, oh there is a big knot there,” said Dunaway. Dunaway was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, she is undergoing chemo and will have surgery. A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, sticking together has been key for this family. “My sister helps me everyday, she reads me a little story from the Bible everyday,” said Dunaway. Dunaway has also found support navigating her cancer journey with Kentucky Cancer link. Its a Lexington organization that helps women not only get the screenings they need, but with things not always covered by insurance like wigs. “They take you back there, and you look at all kinds of wigs and try on all kinds of wigs,” said Dunaway. Dunaway treated it like dress-up to find the perfect look. “Ladies come in and have a seat and generally they will bring family members with them. It’s a great thing to see, is how people come together to help the person in need. We are thankful to provide that service for free,” said Melissa Karr with Kentucky Cancer Link. With her new look, and family by her side Dunaway is looking to beat cancer in 2016. She hopes others will make the new year about putting themselves and their health first. “Always get a mammogram, always check your breast, don’t ignore it,” said Dunaway.
