Julia Michaels Talks New Album, Mental Health + More! | Exclusive Interview

I think part two is a little bit more self-reflective part one talked about mental health part two talks more about break breakups and body image then it does anything I think I feel like songs like that like because they're so personal they're like songs that sort of have to be written by yourself I was in the booth and I was singing something else and then I just thought like I just wanna love my body it's just like kind of came up out of nowhere and I was thinking about all of the things that I like say to myself on a daily basis and how much I just like hate on myself all the time and how I would never how I would never talk to somebody the way that I talked to myself so I wanted to write it from the perspective of literally like fighting with yourself and that toxic relationship between yourself and yourself if I talked to someone else the way that I talk to myself I would be the worst person on the planet like truly my dad and I really close and like no dad wants to see their little girl like heartbroken and I wouldn't I love I love like I like put my whole heart and soul into like everything so when I get my heart broken it's like I can't eat I can't sleep I can't do anything and it breaks his heart so he's definitely got a list he's got a list I think my music is an acquired taste you know it talks about a lot of things that can make people uncomfortable sometimes and I think some people are like not ready for it so I guess by mainstream I mean that I don't I just write what I feel and I just write what I want to and you know that can be taken however people want to take it but really I don't I just want to make music because I want to make it and I want to make it so that it's relatable and it resonates with everybody that listens to it you know there's nothing worse than like when people don't like it because it's like them saying they don't like a part of yourself especially because you're writing it so that can be a little scary but I just wanted them to know that like I'm just I'm writing it for me and I'm running for them and that's it you know to be honest I listen to a lot of things that like most people I guess wouldn't things I don't do well I listen to like a lot of songwriter sick singer-songwriter stuff still like Fiona Apple will always be my constant like Sheryl Crow and I was more set like those are my heroes but I also really loved like Ella Fitzgerald I've been listening to the Fleetwood's and The Andrews Sisters a lot lately just like music where there's like just so much thought like it's just it's just it's like there's no programming there's no like synth sounds it's everything is made right there recorded right there and I think that is so amazing so I love to like pick apart all the strings and all the vocals and all of that stuff so I don't listening to that her diggin is one of those songs so a lot of my fans know my relationship history and I I just heard him because I love love like I love love I love the feeling of being in love I just think it's like just such a magical thing and I would get my heart broken a thousand times if that meant that I got to experience it and know that I had it and that's basically what hurt again is about it's like knowing that this person is not good for you like seeing all the signs like wow you're so much like my ex-boyfriend like this is so scary this is gonna end in a shit show but it's fine because I get to love you and you can love me back hey guys thanks for watching make sure to subscribe for more videos from your favorite artists while you're here check out these other videos
