Melissa’s story about Mental Health First Aid

I work in human resources and I remember one day observing my manager who was supporting an employee who was having a mental health crisis and my manager had such confidence to support this employee
and get them to seek professional help. When the employee was safe we had a debrief and my manager said to me that she’d gained the skills to have that
conversation through the Mental Health First Aid training program. That’s when I decided that I too wanted to be a mental health first aider and I booked
on to the next course. The most valuable takeaways for me out of the two-day Mental Health First Aid training program were that I really got an understanding
of the different mental health issues. It wasn’t just about anxiety and
depression which I already had a little bit of information on it really took me
on a journey to understanding what people may be going through in the
workplace outside those issues and then if those issues did present themselves
how I best manage it. How I best manage a crisis and what a crisis looks like and how I get that person to help really quickly. Less than six months ago I was
with an employee who was having a mental health crisis and at that point in time
I felt so empowered to support this person and ask the right questions and then get the person help that they needed. It made me reflect on how far
I’d come since doing that training program. and I knew that it had given me so much confidence to go ahead and have these
types of conversations and support our employees. I’m Melissa
I’m a HR business partner and I am a Mental Health First Aider. Be one too.
