Promoting Health & Wellness with BetterChoices

it's crystal and I hope you can hear and see me y'all know I love doing stuff and I'm a little bit geeky and every time I do this stuff I learned something new so I'm excited that you're joining me for an episode of the sister circle show live where I get a chance to interview people that I don't get to see physically and in person but that I still would love to talk to you so that I can tell you all about them and help you to get to know someone that I either know admire or desire to share with you and teach you their passion their experience their skill or a lesson learned in life I want to introduce you to area Erik and Malika Beal who are the co-founding health coaches of better choices they are a health and wellness company and a social community that is focused on educating advocating and promoting better health and wellness through lifestyle nutrition and fitness education now I have to tell you how I was introduced to Erik and Malika so the thing is you know you scroll and then Instagram or whatever the social media they try to help you find your people and so I found them because they were talking about this tremendous amount of loss that they weight that they lost and of course anybody that struggles with their weight you want to know what did they do and yeah we all know what to do you got to move and eat less but how you do that is the key and so I started following them and they'll even tell you that better choices is not about a diet meal plan a quick-fix product because we all want a quick fix or a weight loss program it's about a lifestyle and as I follow them on Instagram I've had the opportunity to watch them live this lifestyle and it's awesome so Erik and Malika welcome to the show great which are great really I am I am really really been reminded of most of the things I know to do but watching y'all it's like okay just do them just do the things I think at one point like early on I put a message in like in the comments and you responded to me and the sum total of what you basically said was you just have to do it so so I'm curious about this before we even launch into your story as health coaches and as people who have both as a couple because you both lost a lot of weight together you you've been on this journey and you and you know what the problems are from being unhealthy and the benefits that come with being healthy so when people are asking you the questions because you know they do are you all the kind of health coaches that are like okay let's write this out for you you're encouraging you know that's okay we'll do better next week or you all more of the getting your face kind of do you want to do this or not like what what is your vibe what's the mo when you're coaching people you know we like to encourage people to because you recognize you know their habits and the decisions that you're making and how you're coming about making those decisions and so you know a lot of times while we're addressing what's necessary yeah you like to keep it up you like to keep it keep it from me that helps with the reception or the information okay so out of the two of y'all whose role is what like y'all are two individuals so it makes sense that it be a combination but who is known for what and who is known for whatever the same information into the stairs okay make sense yes to answer the question it really depends on what we're addressing because in some instances you know Eric's woman Eric will take the lead and he'll be more assertive or you know we're really focusing on while we recognize their legitimate excuses at the end of the day there shouldn't be any excuses that keep you from taking care of yourself and so you know those roles will reverse what they were talking about something about the nutrition or culture give your quotient together to do two different things inside quotes I've been world muscle strictly numbers and she feels more so with actual food items right I mean it's all nutrition but we just approach it in to do quite itself I mean dealing with numbers there's really no wiggle room so I mean isn't there so when you say numbers are you talking about macros and calories and weight loss and engines there's so many different gauges that you have to balance yeah most people when they approach this they only know one one gauge calories right understand that right you know right and I feel we covered what we call you know these marketing with these trendy turns like you mentioned macros will be dealing with you know mainly carbs and protein but the aromatic you know measures to the surface in while those things are contributing to a lot of the health deficiencies or with issues of weight loss they ordered the they are the only keys that make a significant difference as you know small okay so now that we kind of know that you're both a bad guy different in different ways yeah no it's great it's great because most of us there are a lot of people that don't know you know they don't know the basics they don't understand macro-nutrients they don't understand that it's not just about calories and they don't understand that you know if they work out all day that they got to do the foods I mean there are a lot of people who don't understand that in my experience with my world my circle of people it's not about lack of knowledge it's about lack of implementation and at the point where you've decided that you want to actually do something having somebody that's willing to draw a line and call you to the carpet and hold you accountable or be the bad guy whatever you want to call it I mean in matters and it's important and for a lot of people it's what gets the job done so I think I think that's that's crucial I want to back up just a little bit though and introduce people to you so can you tell us a little bit about your story where you were why you decided to change and what changed exactly in your life to Bloomington and I was who wants to test some attention two years you want to close those two years I actually hang out in case of struggle when to emerge the clinic went through the viable process not already don't see them and they couldn't assess how much I actually went but still couldn't risk you stealing doctor's office knocks out so anyway the nurse type plants field taking order counterbalances and all of that she gets cover more people come and help Ernie Mercer my on my right-hand side say 398 right back in my head woo my world will clean up heat madness epistemology this at that time I was very popular awesome middle Bollinger he's like that well leave I need a baby controller something else and most of this is controlled through diet lifestyle so I was at the doctor's office myself and I went home my partner in crime did a walk-in with Ruby on energy so when I walked in she got my energy she said okay what's wrong say nothing my Muslim and an attendant internalized mostly internalize things we don't talk about we just deal with so I sat down potato she just sit on the wing like sheep suits you say listen try I say no no I'm good she said look one bag give you five minutes when I come back to eat my nose check out on Monday so she can't mess with a half miles went to a canyon guys and stuff like that so then on the fourth day I told my sailor my dreams for myself but I would rather do this together both of us because that ended up on build ups to be healthy for each other you know me to do this together and hopefully mostly the same would be a balm for each other a long long healthy life will not laugh so anyway we had some other conversations about putting you first and it's gonna get stuck especially mumbles because mine was by the with themselves at bathroom life all right and first thing you have to do you start talking about living a healthy lifestyle that we almost found a little bit selfish you have to devote at least an hour to here every day user at least an hour somebody just checked out then I got half hour hey we are the same 24 world you know when he when you told me that opens of that three days like this was right after Katrina you know kids you know we have lost everything so it was you know as far as time for me it was you know we had all these things that we needed to take care of and exercise and all of that was you know furthest from excusing furthest running from a list and again because I didn't go to the doctor I mean technically have the right have a problem because a lot of times when we go through getting our checkups when he came for the diagnosis of the high blood pressure glucose in him for something that signals what we're doing is not working for us in for everything I as obese as we were we didn't have any science or any symptoms to reflect our lifestyle being in issue so when I tell us they're all the time in my head the pleasure is mine 5:3 276 pounds and even though I didn't have any physical issues you know I was I was unhealthy so when he sat me down and he told me that you notice it was my aha moment I can tell you the next day I went happy about getting up but I got up and we had a little basic you don't want to raise this you said a lot of things we stand awfully mm-hmm something that sometimes mostly time to get out of all the way to get things done yeah well up until that point you know we need me to try again individually to lose weight during different programs pills you know gadgets or and while they yield some results nothing of it was long term and the I think the biggest takeaway from that is we weren't changing the lifestyle habits that was contributing to the help status and the way sex so when we approach to this time we knew we wanted to approach it differently and look at the things that were doing that was actually contributing to the results that we were getting and one thing that we we movie exercise where the part of it that was never a question but it was really about attacking the nutrition and trying to figure out how can we do this normal term and being that way from New Orleans and if you talk to any individual most people love to eat and adapt in a very very operating you know grass and doing all these things bring it something you can do that but if we're talking realistically and we're talking about you know people that have cultural preferences or you know they might eat certain things that don't eat you know something else there is no way that you can continue to eat but who said love but you learn how to prepare them healthier so you know that was a huge turning point for us and as I said you know he embarked on it it wasn't a turning back it wasn't a yo-yo we would wait well it wasn't anything it was being committed to the process that we knew was going to change our life for the long run so you know that's the trouble though I mean many people that are struggling with their weight really I say wait but anything that is that is about our physical cravings or desire people who smoke people who of course want to lose weight people who have other you know addictions I mean it boils down to a decision but there is a challenge with the yo-yo and when you say okay we we started he worked out for three days by himself asked me to join him in this effort and we never looked back why was that the decision at that time why do you think what kept you from yo-yoing and I'm sure as you are coaching other people in their health journeys you deal with this all the time people who before you have yo-yoed or even maybe with you they start out strong and they don't stay with it and then they feel I mean so what even though we know bottom line it boils down to decision what can people understand about a yo-yo mentality or something that will set them up to not do that and to do what you did make the decision and never look back and continue to moving forward better control if you control problem nutrition there 10 out of 10 people don't understand it if you don't understand that you you're not gonna be able to sustain whatever weight loss net because you don't know how to you know end of it is just like driving you can you really imagine driving you understand on the street side you know a red octagon floor white letters that says that steel evening stop you understand it nobody has explained to so for arresting you're driving to an arrest in your lap you put any back you know what it means people would say they do know because the yo-yo dieters will say I've lost the weight I know how to lose it I know how to lose it but then I stopped doing what I was doing to lose it and I gained it back so it in their mind they're like I dunno mole people no one to do the axle second-grader you know how to lose weight eat less exercise more but what most people don't have a better grasp on its how and why would they know is either working for them or working against it did it lose it better than that so yeah I know and at the end of the day it's people almost having to expand the what in your life most people only have two aspects of they know how to work but they don't really know the why out right and that's the difference so they know how they did and you know what they did to get it done but they don't know why so you know without talking about any specific program they used points for an exam you'll point out about me and the people participating in that program they don't understand the value of those points the people operating that program they know the balance but because the individual are implementing it because they don't have an understanding of what goes points translate to to the attrition it becomes a situation where you're either handicapped to that program or it gets old and you go back to doing the same thing those same things that you were doing before because you don't have the complete understanding about nutrition and how it actually applies to you into your particular life's no so when you talk about why do I know a few people who've done a few different systems and have been successful so and I'm just playing devil's advocate so if I'd if I've been able to be successful on a system where I don't understand why but it clicked from me for whatever reason tell me the value of understanding why if some of those systems for some people do work and that's understanding the what but not the why all right in the day the tequila diet is based on protein but if you understand protein I'm saying there's two different types of culture this plant makes an element animal-based protein keep most complete protein is usually accompanied by my soul and my brain you're getting something back and so again it goes back to understand so you know that is not gracefully bigger right so you lose weight but you still have you don't have a complete understanding so you were always nice nothing they're trying says I had a friend that in high school could lose weight like this you know and she would do it on a coke soda and chips soda and chips whether the weight would fall off you know and so but she I remember thinking when she gained weight she gained it ridiculously fast and then you know she would do the same thing you know now of course you lived a little bit you understand that actually extremely yo-yo dieting like that is damaging to your body oh you know just because you can lose it how you lose it actually can it matters that I want I want to go back to your story I think it's great first of all Eric that you invited your wife to join you I think that that saying hey I want to do it together was very powerful both for you as a couple but also just for the people who are watching now and who will watch later doing it with somebody you know accountability community a spouse is great a friend is awesome you know I even remember where was a class at one time at the gym 24-hour Fitness where you know I I can't dance I think I can dance but I know I can so I go to the back and they would lower the light so I could do all the things and not feel like I was on display but even those even the class the people if you go often enough the majority those people I'd never knew their name but it was fun to see them and to know that I was a part of something and so I want to encourage people that are watching yeah invite your spouse grab a friend whatever you're gonna do and enjoy the beauty that comes from doing it together but I but I think it's awesome that you asked your wife to join you so everybody wants to know when you're talking about the amount of weight that you guys had to lose your high 200s Malika and your you know almost 400 pounds what did the journey look like what did y'all Altima Toulouse and how long did it take you and I know we'll get into the weeds of some of the some of the details but just to quickly give that that end of story victory what did that look like what you weren't out there running marathons like this competition so three days in isolation so we're going to the second week I'd already met this route atop in the walkway so doing a 72 started walk everybody welcome to the net not bottle meeting a cadet in move on wall I just turned to another book you see that might open it anyway just complain all the different objects to deploy I in society and I see you know what I need to like want a car so when I guys know like what's it all about five steps I just looked at my state oh please my turn around that my wife right behind me a long day all right she stuck just was to be me you said to do it against being win yeah just money who else as we have to train go side by side it has been a challenge of a sense that a she started level it's been a challenge me actually breaks under ten is a thing yeah so you know it's really about cop all right so listen but you did it so there's something about being antiquated I tell my dad all the time I'm like okay I got my my we talked about our book writing habits and I got my computer and I got my research tools I have this program and whatever and then he's a yellow pad guy you know he'll be 70 this year and he says to me he said that's great but how many books have you written the bottom line is get a job get a job yeah your story is just as motivational having done it without the social media watching as it is if the bottom line is you've done it and you still have before and after pictures so we can see the proof yeah and one of the other turning points for us in this process when we say it wasn't turning back is we didn't approach it this time as something to do to lose weight you took weight loss totally off the table you know what we were doing was not driven to drive scale but we don't use driven to improve our blood or contribute to improve our cardiovascular health it was driven to over all the other glasses the focus was overall cup when one about one particular people understood that baby's weight was my other in every but I say the third party's over african-american male Japan's there's a thousand different ways I take care of my blood pressure I soon they're gonna be I think Ariel's to us cynical a shortish I take care of those for young still overweight so it's a combination of anything kept interest right but what we found it they ate you address you know specific things you not only create better health for yourself but you create a lifestyle that you can sustain and on top of that as the bonus not as a focus not as the goal that extra bonus weight-loss takes care of itself and so you don't have to think about am I going to be able to keep this weight off am I going to be able to sustain these habits because the process that you have embarked on as far as establishing develop health for yourself you've created it small things that are going to make a big difference when it comes down to not only your blood work but how you physically feel it like you said as a result losing the weight and keeping it off so well I will say this for a person who I'm a goal-oriented person so it's always about the numbers for me and I will say this i looked up the other day and someone asked me about weight loss and i haven't been trying to focus on that I mean it's a thing that I need to focus on my whole life we didn't just be conscious but I haven't been focusing on it but it like you said it's taking care of itself because there are other things going on in my life many people that are watching me already know that my mom was diagnosed with the cancer and it's a rare cancer so you know just you go into all the things both traditional and just naturally to set your body up for success and as we do things for her we're doing them for us out of overflow I'm cooking for my family and you know then bringing things to them my dad and my mom and so out of that without a focus on the numbers it does take care of itself and I think that for me focusing on the numbers and I'd be curious to know what you see in your experience if you're goal-oriented alone once you hit the number something turns off because I made it wait wait numbers you can ask the person mirror what happened when I hit that goal we do have a goal that first day after it's gonna be a train wreck because you're gonna go that is we said all the times as simple as to question two of us two or always before 2 plus 2 represents your family prospects more than represent yourself as long as your process remains the same yours are unchanged but the same the split-second to never said that you made up in your mind that you're gonna change that process just balloon the result is supposed to change too and that's the process the thought process you have to take along when you return so when I get my call bleep I can't change much as Buster which means there's no longer dinosaur lifestyle this is way more aggressively so if we give you an example for Eric and I our goal is you know making sure that we get so much for the vegetation every day between my presenter you know other goals could be maintaining your sodium at a particular level so while we're in high focusing on let's say the scale at forest goals or numbers we have our time as focusing on specific targets as correlated to their current house ads because at the end of the day you know the skill is going to take care of itself but if we were on high blood pressure we're taking you know insulin where we have these diagnoses or let's say we're in the pre-diagnosis state when there isn't anything there and we know how our habits our order then we shift the focus away from the thing that we've all been trained to look at but that's the thing when we talk about you know weight loss that's the that's the distraction yeah yeah yeah and so you know you want to flip that and get people reconnected with you know their violinist everything that a – and we can maybe eat everything up a tree has a battery in its effect in some cell in your life so the ultimate goal is to have the best possible doesn't that you can put together my chronic disease well yeah and what happens is that by the time you reach I'm sorry my date 28 1949 is any word by the time you reach my age if you've been neglecting the nutrition for the last 20 30 35 40 years you can actually cells that I'd like to point that would give others about you know manage memory and the number generate so not you've been diagnosed with some sort of heart disease you know so while he had an opportunity to get in front of one he had opportunity you know we can be proactive to suit Riya have you seen people because I think sometimes that one of the mentalities is I mean I'll even I said for myself one day I said the last time I had a goal a goal number for the scale I actually said to somebody this the last time I'm gonna do this and then if I can't keep it off I'm just gonna decide to be fat and happy so whether it's deciding to be comfortable in your own skin or or to say that you know I've been on this blood-pressure pill and it's just the way it is or my mother you know had this chronic disease or its I think sometimes there's a settling in to the weight or to the or to the to the illness even because it doesn't necessarily stop you right now from living life the way you want to live it so can you speak – that kind of the the mindset that this is just the way it is and this is what I know it's not the way it is we make it well the wait a second this is which is which you've learned to accept and that's because you don't understand with it's an O and we won't get too far into it but well conditions dictate that we accept you know with then to you makes you think that this is your way of life you know that you can't make any specific changes to make to rectify this and a lot of times for us and we've seen it in our own clients where they go in to see the doctor and the doctor is not talking about nutrition to conquer it is not asking them specific lifestyle questions nor do they they have the time or the patient doesn't have and resources to connect with the dietician or you know whenever it is to help them figure out their their lease they'll figure it out if they get into the hospital they'll be like right that first line when she came in I was who she wanted to persuade but she had been on high blood pressure person since to the age of 19 as an unknown the rest of my life because this tipping point I think you were maybe 60 days maybe close to the 90 days and when she went to her doctor and that thing she called this wrong the she's crying because I'm a husband or my secretary and once you got ourself and goodness you say y'all know who all my medication other things yeah oh that's great you know we have another client just started the first 30 days 30 days 30 days 28 29 30 days lifestyle training proper nutrition inside of 30 days she went to my doctor last week my chopped salad oh oh don't you be doing blender read it we doing in the meantime we're gonna reduce the amount you know we been conditioned to think of the process because of balance because we failed and dieting and all these other things we've been conditioned to think that this process you can get overwhelmed because you don't know where to start but if we can start pinpointing specific things and commit to working on those things we say tipping point small things make a big difference you're cooking at home makes a big difference you drinking water makes a big difference controlling your sugar intake makes a big difference not eliminating food roots from your diet makes a tremendous difference and while those things being huge this small thing that you're doing every day one choice one meal one day the time you know basics a good grade they want to easily remove something completely eliminate something from the dock yeah that in the business baguettes and nutrition you understand – not even later it's about balance is about control it's about balance and other things that you do take in so nothing hold anything up because if you don't the thing in my opinion is the thing that that has gotten America in trouble especially our diets have been well thank you can be social you know social status and becomes happy I'm gonna comment without it's a social thing and all those limbs attached division you can do it so okay so let me every time you see me looking down it's gonna want this pin here and write these questions okay first of all I'm curious are you both naturally discipline people people who you know anybody can decide and they can make a change but I'm just saying in the general course of y'all's lives like individually are y'all naturally like once you decide to do something you do it kind of people cover color things and a lot of that has to do with not only who we who we are but the people that we desire to be an individual as a couple as coaches just anything that we attach ourselves to and because of my husband is military veteran he came into I'm a think of relationship with structural order discipline now had some aspects the one that really helped me to appreciate those is that it's been 13 years for our team on so because we've been doing this for 13 years you know our conversation our commitment and even on the consistency nothing was different from there but we had all of these years experience because you would take your Louisa tations impressed you take some tired you don't sing pop Carlos transmission so I love it so the discipline part of it is when you understand something my name is Eddie that's if you know really that pop and I'll tell you why because knowing that it doesn't automate the process is doing back just like one really knowing that only puts you in the position to make a better choice it's still pushing the toy and position to make a decision right so you know the consequences of the wrong decision it sure to the question of you know individuals wanting but they say that they want if you've identified a goal you know that goal is not going to happen on the song it's over I'm going to be the head up the committee even on the days but you don't want to you know you don't have feel like you don't have nothing else to give so whether it is a personal role or professional goal or it's comfortable it will be talking about weight loss if you say I want to lose suction suction this is what I want to attain you have to ask yourself what am I willing to change to make that happen for myself let me let me interject this thing because we've got people watching and they're asking questions one person specifically said I agree with all of this I recognize that I need to make a lifestyle change and then in all caps but I'm the mother of a toddler a wife a commuter my workday starts at 5:00 a.m. she said work I guess getting up for working all the things and it doesn't end until 8:30 a.m. I really do have trouble finding room for me so how do I get started because I do have to sleep too into not trying to prepare ourselves anything like that I'm just letting you know we are essential in quality so instead of trying to find time for you you have a figure and make time Pete is you'll never fight yeah it's always something you want to look like and I promise you you will never find 30 minutes of free time where you could do some feet you have to make the time yeah put it on the schedule say you know well between 3:00 and 4:00 on tomorrow is mine I'm putting my phone do not disturb I'm telling my kids my husband my family well man this is one I will touch basically either 59 minutes and 59 seconds and then there is you know a magic number because a lot of times thinking about time right let's say like you know in our your time you know the stuff that you can create yourself may not be in a 60 minute window in Miami five minutes and might be 15 minutes and the thing that we say you know with our kind is if you're working somewhere you can't get to a gym we can find opportunities where we can get in physical activity but we wanted to put physical activity on the back for us about what can we do about attrition which no matter what you're going to eat the gym that's working hard every day that's you can't exercise a bad diet okay so so so let me ask you this when y'all started you you talked about coming home and getting up the next morning and going and working out did y'all journey primarily start with movement and these you back you gradually added in the food or did you start both at the same time just because y'all are from New Orleans either things that we used to hear you know looking at it individually they're really still but we just prepared differently so the practice of cooking was up was always there so for us because we had so much going on it was about I'm not that time apamea was all it was always Sun is still Sun where I spend so much time living cooked so many meals for the week so that way during the week between all of the chaos when I'm going out to buy in your fix up our you know I love dinner and he meet because for us it was always important for us to eat dinner and our family so you know that was something that we personally adopted we know that that that is a blessing or a gift that everybody doesn't have but we can still make sure that we have healthy middle spot yourself to either bring it with us gonna have those meals for you know your family in case you're not home and they have to eat you know how long on Sunday let's talk really practically and I actually I want to get I don't want to forget I want to get back to the lady who asked the question because I'd love for you to say just make some assumptions maybe about her day and where she could get in movement movement not first okay but cooking on Sunday what is your time commitment and I know everybody usually we're talking about two to maybe four hours being the max and four hours means that you know baking chicken being kill because there's certain dishes that we fix every week and is no wait that's that's you're not creating gourmet menus every day that are different finish this one and then we'll go back talk about when you spend that time what you're doing cuz people get overwhelmed because I got to learn a whole nother repertoire of food and if I'm if I'm gonna eat it and if my family's gonna eat it because I don't want to cook a million times four million people it has to be beautiful and you know they get overwhelmed the average person is not going to go any more than seven maybe eight nights and you know some people want to get ready pretty neat stuff different everyday my hands been in Europe reach ahead so what we do is that you culture small things and make a big bit the things that are not going to work when you think we shouldn't you tell you about just being explained to you while we adjusted behind makes sense a kid is creating an understanding so once you get know we can have good food selections good food combinations that produces it working for you moving in the right direction that you want to go in it I wanna send that repetition kisses you don't want to split away from him because you understand everything that you consume you honks and everything the bother why is working for you how it's working for you we don't work for you what is gonna do you understand anyway the thing with you know the types of food when I would you know weekend about the elaborate changes of meals that one of the reasons why we don't do the meal plans because milkman for us because everybody does the same thing but if we can begin with the types of foods that you like eat the vegetables that you're currently eating you're glad that you want to do is telling you need to eat broccoli starting out and you don't like eventually we'll get there but let's just all the pedestrians that you're eating not and that gives us a starting point so if we're looking at these that you like fishing we'll look at those foods and those things that are working for you that's great those things that's not working for you we can identify those things you look at the ingredients and tell you what spots you can make so you can have that same dish but it's improved so if I everything my beans are something that we eat every week we'll give you this because beans are considered a superfood because they give you double digits and protein and five now then from the walls what we put in our beans destroys the nutritional benefit of food so these are not bad again a ball is your solid if you put the Hawks in there that's nice if you have people like us again because it's been so long we've transitioned so initially started out do you know smokes I syndrome do a turkey taco but because we're aware of the hidden sodium's but the hidden sodium we're preparing addition even though we're including a let that process to meet you real we're not adding other things that was sitting nutritional benefit on that dish totally on the rack killed there's something else to me and really because superfood not only be giving you crazy little vitamins in but you know main dish equipment and a brat so there's this big signature things that we have in our fridge rater guarantee everything then our to cook something else one or two dishes I'm sorry that we become okay do you do you like to cook both of you said you cook but do you what are you how does this impact a person who currently doesn't really cook so half of the problem is they're not eating right but the reason why they're not eating right is because they don't cook it's not maybe even the grandparents they don't have the rhythm in their life for yeah right you can't really expect the results of change if you're not going to change the process right so you gotta you gotta work the patient as far as cooking there's a lot of healthy dishes that you can prepare that won't take any time I don't know we have a clock right doesn't have access to a kitchen every day if she's finding a way to make it happen yeah I'm sad so at end of the day that we lost the swing you might consume your life in nutrition and health as much money on nutrition and health is what's on your mind cooking is a major part of it but you know we recognize like when you know fire that you mentioned you know sometimes they'll be those situations where you can't get home where you can't cook that doesn't mean that you can't see out of identities we have to be even more diligent about what we choose only in doubt and the modifications that we made by ourselves or will be in a social setting because a lot of time looking through friends and social settings we feel some kind of way when to everybody else yeah it takes longer to order or feels like community companions and the thing that we we stated that is that everybody found on this journey with you you chose this journey because you want to improve your health you have goals you have to recognize that sometimes you're going to travel that path by yourself and that's okay because when you go in and mentor me to get on that scale or you're excited about that non-skilled wind where you know you made a better choice communicating out for and you know you when you exercise we have my dad come in and see it fair fall so so so when you when you're talking about these changes we understand you got to be willing to make the change if you want to see a change is gonna mean that you the way you're doing it is not the way you're gonna continue to do it and I know that you are doing coaching it sounds like one of the benefits of your coaching is it's a customized approach because you want people to eat it so you're not going to give them this pre-planned meal plan you're gonna look at what's going to work for them and how you can best transition them but so they'll still eat the food and and work those activities into their life but I'm wondering about the person who to questions for the person who made you know coaching when we talk about that and I do want you to talk about that I'm how people can connect with you but for whatever reason maybe it's a financial thing or whatever where can they start so the first question is who or what people programs processes books I mean just name a couple of things I've been the most helpful to you on your journey if someone just wants to do some self education the second thing would be if someone is going to start if there were just some simple things that you would say and you kind of mention them as we've gone but just for the person just to capsulize those things how does someone get going so what has helped you learn and grow and then what would be the first thing that you would advise somebody meet you on the street they recognize you hey y'all with people on dr. oz what do I do lose weight you know what he what he gonna give them and then and then if you can go from those two things into how people can connect with you if you just control many calories that you drink I mean I can only go by sonic once a month for my sweet juices even though the stuff that claims to be healthy like business this well tonight City this is healthy juices made all these vegetables in Holly Street but if you look on the back is finished so baby gotta break behind the brain banks for old-school strength world he knows him in training on this whole time straight water you know Nate the big calories they make excessive sugar in recent ranchers that's the first thing the second thing the second thing is in this petition question that the person acts when my funny they got long if you're not able to commit thirty four to five sixteen minutes to at all right we have to employ when we call the percentage are all right it all students ended up comes a buck you never thought about it alright steady drop you got five minutes give me five minutes if you got ten minutes getting to ten whatever you got I'll take we know we've got on the tape I'm sorry if I'm gonna give you three sets of five I'll take three sets of five is more than we did yesterday and it's a starting point of building again going back more by – if you don't stop somewhere you'll end up north all right so the exercise think that's the wrong thing y'all have these things called smart on the graph we don't have these things called smart phones they have cameras on you can set alerts one of the first things we did in first under this we send an alert for every high all right every I don't know how that bomb goes off three things you gonna do them when you get up in this seat and shirt number two it you can get something to drink perfectly water number three we're gonna move some sort of activity thirty Seconds foot it's running late jumping jacks push-ups sit-ups squats whatever thirty-six this only asking for 37 if you do it anyway I'm gonna over before you know it by hitting we can look back and say hey everyone first of all to do this full set him honey did 20 sets of exercises this week that I didn't do last week this is yeah for me a couple of things that she asked what were some of the things that helped us starting half we started that no resources for us starting out we air created and I can't change the title of the book another I got Austin in transfer when we were moving back but it was an LL Cool J can he do he didn't finish book so you know when we started it was saying step back and recognizing that you know we know we all eat so let's look at some athletes to see what it is that they're doing to maintain you know their their physical section if you will and so when you can get them looking at their guys look at the calories that they consume looking at the different combinations activity and then they came what one in particular was said to kill him didn't you write he said his pregame meal was like so many straights so many cannon string beans and I'm like relaxing state enjoyment so when I started me seven I'm kind of not a protein type attitude better than that and he's feeling his violin just like all of you stealing this by putting this on voluntary trip makes sense body's like a cop so you know that became a resource and I think that exercise again this was a long time true and I think celebrity was it's the Letterman face but we used to come on vh1 and I believe it's like the first weight-loss show you know that was popular that was on TV well the guy that was in charge of exercise and it was hardly something I can't be insane but he put out a video of our exercise DVD and so for me then came a starting point and I pitched my when I popped it in I was like this food is great I'm gonna be able to do this and I quit and the thing that stuck with me is they were doing jumping jacks and I literally could not do a chocolate chip couldn't do anything but that became a starting point and you know I can't really speak to how I felt but I knew that I was driven to get it to get it done these bitches get to that 60 million side of that fitness DVD and by the time you wrap up I'm gonna do it a disc sort of tips you know starting point every song of my exercise I'm gonna say eating something pretty twice a name and track you know there's a lot of mixed messages about track you attract and its gets downplayed it's talked about very badly I read something the other day that in other words you're crazy if you continue to track your food and for us that's just like their bank account is tracking their money nutrition becomes your your currency currency for you're buying anything you don't know what you're putting in then you have no idea where your needs are and you don't know if you're actually creating the balance and what you think is a small amount when you really put pen to paper you recognize is bigger than what you assumed or you anymore than what you thought it and so you begin to look at it and black and write you have some tangible debt all these accidents beaten down on our behaviour on our preferences but yet when we do it for ourselves when it comes to tracking is something that we exist and so we're more comfortable with somebody else tracking out that and we are collecting it for ourselves so once we shift back in commit even if you're doing it for seven days Eric and I have been doing it for thirteen years we started tracking he created an extras Excel spreadsheet and we literally look in their labels write this stuff down so the tools that they have developed a matter of it becoming about you know my biggest path I own that all right we know some other things there are really great tools for you to track what it is that you're that you're eating and you're drinking on a daily basis and really look at where you can make some changes and most people yet you can come back on the showers but if we look at some other things we know that we are part of speeding what you don't think we're getting I was gonna say I know I want to tell everybody I know that your site is better choices Co right that right so not Tom Co Co Co better tribe echo so I'm assuming that everything people would want to know about you guys health coaching your books recipes and they can follow you online can they start there and then kind of go from there to connect with you in all these different ways the best things I absolutely we have our recipes website you mentioned you do have two cookbooks one is healthy lifestyle when we cover the whole book the mill coins and we provide some resources on getting started the only one has helped me Dempsey because that's one of the biggest complaints that we hear what folks don't know what the food for dinner and then trying to prepare something that's healthy and that does take a lot of time I taste it so with that taking book but we just focus on many I guess many dishes again just to show folks how simple it is for you to prepare things that look good taste it and doesn't take a lot of time to prepare as far as coaching we do have individual coaching like you mentioned everybody may not be open to coaching because in see how can I put it it becomes an intimate I guess experience and then you're opening yourself up to strangers if you will so a lot of times by the time somebody has to have decided to join us they've been watching us but you know two years or three years and so the rough back we get excited about that because you had an opportunity to see it real time for a long duration of time but that when you finally decide to make that step for yourself what we've done you have even you have evidence for and so he just get the opportunity to to work with you more directly the other thing that we have to solve that problem again a lot of people know what to do but they don't know how to apply so we're excited to relaunch our session time online course and when we initially rolled it out we were doing it as a four-week course where we were controlling the time the painful release so we could spend more time working with individuals at the same time we've opened it up to where at anytime whenever you're ready you can sign up from the program you can go through the modulus to get the information if you need to reach out based on the concepts that you are applying within that week then you know bringing wouldn't happen to kind of dialogue and help people help people that way because I checked it through everything that we do is I'm going in and information out there but none of to just being that not only that resources that resource of being that sense of support because you know we've been there and we're here to really highlight a concept of sustainability yeah that's so good well I I want to say to you I want to ask us a couple more quick questions one one is your benefits of we know if you lose weight and you talked about that without focusing on the numbers when you focus on your health I'm trying to be professional here but boys okay just trying to do right and there looks like they get louder and louder so whatever this is just y'all that's how it is oh I've got five kids the boys are the ones that are still at home they're 16 14 and 10 and my girls are grown they're 28 and 22 and 28 year old got two kids so we always have a house full of later can't believe I had to that the conversation listen I can tell you what happened they're gonna tell me you said 1:30 we thought you were done anyway so one is I forgot what I was saying it was old benefits mmm health benefits but I've been watching now a long time so I've seen y'all talk about a few other benefits that are not about blood activity is not for weight loss is for cardiovascular health now the topic that you're talking about this like maybe week seven eight the post process and that's when you start to do cardiovascular to notice a change in sizes based on all right counteracted effect on learning need to be talking right so that's even more reason for you to know you know just make any sweet whether you know anything and we share the sort before too you know [Applause] couple of things not only do you have blood left them but if we have better confidence you're physically more fit more limber stronger so they think that that benefits that connection that you just can't even explain and you've got experience I've had multiple people comment on just loving to see you guys together obviously you guys have been working married but working together on this journey and in your business and that compatibility and just the dynamic of you guys talking we've had a lot of people saying it's just great to see us do it but here's my last question I'm curious I know this is a business for you all has this been able to now become a full-time business for both of you or is this a side hustle for one of you in kind of full-time for the other the world one month yeah alright so we didn't open in 2001 and we came back time that showed air it was just people son showing a new us and that's not the same to be eligible for Katrina right wow man Facebook social media just took off and people people would literally calling us all day every day what did you do so everything came to a point where we couldn't focus on different because we would answer that same question yeah all the area put an asset inside of the business right that's right you know to me I see the whole thing I feel like from the moment for a lot of people but you know from the moment of Katrina there was a course there was a plot shift and you guys took the opportunity and the invitation to walk into a new season and as often and as you continually said yes to the new thing into the new direction new opportunity God continued to open up new opportunities for you to walk out probably what he had always seen in plan for you but you had to have a shift in circumstances to see everything from your trip to the doctor first wrote to the move to the move back home you know it's all kind of been played out but it's only played out well because you guys have continued to say yes you know and so I just I love to highlight that because so many people think that so hard to figure out you know how to move things and shift things and if they would just say yes to the thing that's in front of them then you can't even imagine how how the waters will part you know on your behalf I didn't know that that was more time for you guys and I just guess that it might be so I was I wanted to ask that you could share that hey your whole life has changed because you made one change and you're like to begin with saying we just couldn't do all three and so there was well for me this collection because eating is a collective even heads I'm still good how often Susan was a policeman most collectors when they call you get beat up demand demand per minute trying to understand how we better help you do it that's so good too because even to say because I always think god wastes nothing so the skills that you were developing in that season of your life are still at work in this season of your life it's a different flavor it's just I love it y'all this is Erik and
