and one of those cases has sent an East Valley woman to the hospital thanks for joining us for ABC 15 News at 4:00 on pay Frederick's the Maricopa County Health Department is looking into 27 cases of West Nile virus those are the only cases in the state of Arizona 16 have been confirmed test results for the other 11 still out and take a look at these numbers in the first half of 2019 we've had 16 confirmed cases of West Nile that's more than 2018 and in 2016 and the same number as 2014-2015 and 17 the only years with more cases but again that's for the entire year today the family of a valley woman diagnosed with West Nile after being bitten by a mosquito wants to warn you this is serious and you need to take action ABC 15 is Karla Navarre joining us live from st. Joseph's Hospital and Karla this couple's lives really changed after just one mosquito bite one mosquito bite that's all it took the woman suffering from the West Nile virus is in her mid 40s she's in a specialized clinic fête inside here st. Joseph's Hospital now her significant other told us that she was at Mercy Gilbert in the East Valley and that doctors there told him she was the worst case of West Nile virus they'd ever seen we were talking about marriage until all this happening Chris Silva and his partner of four years Karen seen here and much happier and healthier days today he's sharing with us his pain of six weeks after Karen was bitten by a mosquito that carried the West Nile virus she went from having meningitis to the West Nile virus and encephalitis and again we thought that you know a couple few days in the hospital and then get back home but with very little brain activity and living off of feeding and breathing tubes the possibilities of going home seemed a bit far away for Karen chris says it was in early June when she first got sick you know she's basically been paralyzed ever since with there being no cure for West Nile chris is hopeful that the swelling of the brain will start to cease and that her immune system gets strong enough to fight off the virus his reason for sharing this very personal story is so others don't go through what Karen is going through right now be careful with mosquitoes because none of us think much of it but one mosquito can do incredible damage and we had no idea yeah we reached out to the County Health Department trying to get more information about the cities where these 27 cases of West Nile have been reported they would not give us any more information saying that it could give some people living in cities unaffected by the West Nile virus a false sense of security reporting in Phoenix I'm Carla Nevada at the ABC 15 Arizona Carla thanks there is also an easy-to-use interactive map from the Maricopa County Department of Environmental Services this is what it looks like you can enter your address and find out if there are mosquitoes in your area and if fogging has taken place recently you can find that link with this story at ABC 15.com and
